It is the 40th year for the R.S.P.B. Big Garden Birdwatch. You can apply to the R.S.P.B. for your birdwatch pack if you want to participate on the 26-28 January 2019. |

At this time of year and especially when there is snow food shortages for wild birds occur. The rspb have included in their 'Big Garden Birdwatch' pack a recipe for making a Bird Cake. You will need:- cream/yogurt pots, string, mixing bowl. bird seed, grated cheese, raisins, lard or suet. Make a hole in the bottom of the pot. Thread string through the hole and tie a knot on the inside, leave enough string to enable you to tie the pot to your bird table or tree. Cut the lard/suet into small pieces and put into the mixing bowl. Add the other ingredients and mix them together. Knead the mixture until it is all held together by the fat. Fill the pot with the bird cake mixture and put it in the fridge to set for an hour or two. Hang out and wait for the birds.
RAISINS ARE POISONOUS TO DOGS. DO NOT USE RAISINS IN THE BIRD CAKE IF YOU HAVE A DOG.

Will electric currants be ok instead of raisins?. Only joking, I also put some porrige oats into the mix, the birds seem to like them. |

Electric currants should warm them up nicely, and make their feathers stand on end |

I'd love to watch the birds in my garden but our dog has decided it's a 'no fly area' so I only see crows seagulls and magpies and they stay on the roof out of the dogs way! :o) |
