Safety concerns for who the runners or organisers. Is this an out because they do not have enough entries or enough marshals?

Yes - they couldn't guarantee the safety of the runners apparently?
Memories are made of these..... www.tredegar.co.uk/starlight |

Surely they knew the safety implication's in the planning stage.
Hold on, who was organising it.....
Figures...... |

quote: It is with deep regret that Tredegar Town Council has to announce that the Clock to Clock Road Race due to be run on 22nd June 2008 has been cancelled. The safety of the runners could not be guaranteed on the stretch of road between Hollybush and Tredegar, therefore on the strong advice of Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council's Highway Department, their Safety Advisory Group and Gwent Police the risks could not be mitigated and the race had to be cancelled.

Did they not think to change the route, go up through Markham and over the mountain road and down park hill.

It is a real shame but maybe the council could develop the plan further for a race to go ahead next year or the year after? The only issue then is that any runners who had decided to compete in this race and then found it cancelled may not be so ready to commit to it again in fear of the same happening next time. |

One of the first things that should have been checked and cleared in this day & age was the health and safety issues. If this was a show stopper, then why was it not picked up earlier?
Not only as Penfold has said, people would have been wasting their time in training, but also what about the costs of this failed project to the tax payers of the town?
The phone calls, the organization, the printing and distribution of the posters as displayed below. The monies will have to be returned to the people that have already entered. People that work for the town council get paid (by you and me...) , and all this time and effort has been wasted.....
Did Blaenau Gwent Council supply the town council with late or incorrect information, or did the Town council not ask, ask to late, or maybe did not understand it?
Is it Newport City Council that has cocked up ?
What every the reason, it’s a shambles, and the town looses out again..... and thats a fact....
Maybe somebody should spend some time reading this

you are correct:
tredegar council tax band d £1,228.54 gwent police get 159.94 out of that to deal with anti-terrorism, organised crime, gang shootings, youth knife crime, street crime (muggings) etc and they can congratulate theirselves that there were 6 police forces worse than them.
westminster, where lots of the london marathon takes place Band D £687.62 met police get 223.60 out of that towards the fight against off road bikes and illegal parking.
finished 14th in the last performance tables out of 43.
one of those police forces has been dealing with the london marathon for 27 years, the notting hill carnival for 42 years, lord mayor's show, trooping of the colour, chinese new year, various other carnivals and parades. one of them knows the route to the seaside.
who do i send a cheque to so i can get a level of policing like the met?
i'm not sure how the other services they get in westminster compare with tredegar, but illegal parking gets your car removed and you have to pay over £200 to get it back, plus £40 per day. not too many places for the offroad motorbikes and the parks are policed quite well to stop them going in there. drinking doesn't seem to be a problem, not really any trouble with binge drinkers.
there seem to be more people sleeping on the streets in westminster and there are some large sections of poverty.

I wonder how they guaranteed their safety.....
perhaps the council there doesn't care about safety.
maybe the clock lightbulb hasn't been changed because there needs to be lots of scaffolding put up, safety nets in place and a crack team of Everest climbers with ropes, to change the lightbulb. BG council and TTC have perhaps been buying lottery tickets, so they can get another big win to pay for this.

i'm sure it will highlight which people can be released and save us money in the long term. anyone have a list of the people involved in the (dis)organisation of this?
there will be an investigation and report into this won't there? most organisations would expect it.

Clock Run Stopped. Source - Gwent Gazette.
A UNIQUE event to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Tredegar Town clock has been cancelled on health and safety grounds.
To celebrate the milestone Tredegar town council had planned to resurrect the Newport to Tredegar 21-mile road race. Fondly known as the Clock to Clock race, the event was planned to start at the clock tower at Newport Civic Centre and finish 21 miles away at Tredegar town clock. As one of the oldest long distance races in Wales if not the UK the race is steeped in history being first run in 1963 as part of Tredegar's Christmas celebrations and was organised by the Tredegar Chamber of Trade for many years. The course record of one hour, 53 minutes and 26 seconds was set by Bob Sercombe in 1973 and many world class long distance runners have participated including Martyn Daykin, Mark Pickard, Mick Mcgeoch and Nantyglo mountain man Gwyn Williams. International athletes such as Norman Wilson, Dave Francis, Alan Rushmer, Maurice Cowman, Ali Cole, Ritchie Bullen and Dave and John Walsh have made the trek up the Gwent Valley whilst local running runners in Club 69 were regular winners of the team trophy, particularly in the latter years of the race's history. It was hoped that on June 22 around 100 athletes would add their names to the list of successful participants but it was announced last week that the event had been cancelled. “Due to health and safety requirements and the safety of the runners, it is with deep regret that this race has had to be cancelled,” a spokesman for Tredegar town council said. “The risk factors on the A4048 could not be mitigated and safety had to be paramount. “We were strongly advised by Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council Highways and Gwent Police before we took the decision.” A council spokeswoman said: “Blaenau Gwent Council has fully supported the organisers of the race. “We, along with Gwent Police, have identified the safety measures along the route that would be required for the race to go ahead.” For further details contact Tredegar Town Council at Bedwellty House, Bedwellty Park, Tredegar by telephone on 01495 722352 or email at tredegarc@btconnect.com.

the road just needed to be closed for an hour, at most, as the runners are club standard, not fun runners. one lane used for runners and one left for access using vehicles, with traffic lights, if needed, for various sections.

I've only just seen this thread - I have actually successfully organised the Clock to Clock road race in the past and it's a nightmare. You can't close a road 'for about an hour' because that assumes that all runners - male and female are of similar ability - they never are, and if you close a road you have to signpost alternate routes, to do this you have to buy/rent road signs (traffic lights) - they have to be erected - and removed.. The route already climbs 1,400 feet from Newport to Tredegar with the end being the climb from the prom to the clock - a killer, and was already the toughest road race in the UK so there is no way you just 'go up through Markham and over the mountain road and down park hill' that is absolute nonsense. Finally the issue of insurance - if your risk assessment cannot guarantee the safety of the competitors you will not get insurance - end of. You cannot run a race on open roads without insurance. Anyway all in the past now - but I bet none of the warriors on here put their hand up and said 'I'll help' .. .. |
