June Events from Tredegar Town Council

This is going to be a busy time for us all at Tredegar Town Council.

The month starts with the return of the Casket containing the Earth from the Battle of Tredegar Hill in Burma on Saturday 4th June 2011. There will be a short Service of thanks at St. James’s Church, Poplar Road at 1.30pm before the Casket is carried, in procession, to Bedwellty House via the Memorial Gates in Morgan Street at 2.15pm. This event will form part of the re-opening of Bedwellty House and Park to the public and everyone is welcome to join us at St. James’s and to join in the procession to the House.

The Concerts in the Bandstand return in fine style on Sunday 5th June 2011, with our very own Tredegar Town Band returning to play the first concert from 3pm until 5pm. This will be a bitter sweet time for us all with the concert being dedicated to the memory of Alan Fox, who died recently and a collection for the Alzheimer Society will take place during the concert. The Band are currently ranked 3rd in the World following their recent successes in Montreaux.

On Sunday 12th June 2012 from 3-5pm we are delighted to be featuring the Abergavenny Borough Band as our second concert in the Bandstand at the newly refurbished Bedwellty House and Park. Come along and have a listen!
Next is our tribute to our Armed Forces at Parc Bryn Bach on Saturday 18th June 2011 from noon until about 4.30 pm. Once again we will be raising money for the Help for Heroes Appeal and it’s not too late to get a stall at the event to promote your group or organisation or raise funds on the day. The £5 we ask as a donation will go directly to the Appeal. Amongst the attractions will be a fair for little ones; stalls; a Rescue Display by the Newfoundland Dogs; Tredegar & District Canine Society Dog Show (entries can be made on the day); inflatable paintball range from the Royal Welsh; a live radio broadcast by Matt Lane, Mountain FM; and more to be confirmed. Also there will be a special visit by Iris Williams OBE to promote a new CD launched in aid of the Help For Heroes Appeal, called The Brave Bar None, which will be available on site. Our local ATC divisions will have a range of displays and (fingers crossed) we are hoping to have a Griffin Helicopter on the ground for everyone to see, courtesy of RAF Shawbury (Times and activities are subject to change and weather). It’s also a chance to meet Miss Blaenau Gwent. Please come along and support us on the day – remember this event is sponsored by Tredegar Town Council and all funds raised on the day will be donated to the Help for Heroes Appeal –we raised £1100 last year, let’s see if we can beat it!

Sunday 26th June 2011, will be a very special day. This will be the day that the Memorial to the Battle of Tredegar Hill, Burma which is located in the lobby of Bedwellty House is rededicated by the Royal British Legion Chaplain, Fr. John Davis. This will take place at 3pm prior to the third concert of the Season in the Bandstand at Bedwellty Park. Details of the band yet to be confirmed, but full details will appear on our web-site and will be advertised throughout the Town. There will also be the chance to take the “Bevan Tour” from 1pm at the Orchid House Tea Room, Bedwellty House returning in time for tea before the re-dedication. Please contact the Town Council Office to book your place.

And finally, on Sunday 3rd July 2011 from 3pm to 5pm the Lewis Merthyr Band will bring this first season of concerts at the refurbished Park, to a close.

All these events are sponsored by Tredegar Town Council and are free to all. Please come and join us at all or any of them. We hope that the Concerts in the Park will be a great success this year after the break whilst the renovation works took place.

The Armed Forces event at Parc Bryn Bach is our chance to show our support to all our Armed Forces, if you would like to take part it’s not too late – let us know what you want to do and we’ll squeeze you in! But please, come along and join in the fun!

If you require any further details or would like to take part in the Armed Forces event or book a place on the Bevan Tour, please contact us at the Town Council Office by telephone on 01495 722352 or by e-mail at: tredegartc@btconnect.com or drop in at the Library in the Circle (opening hours below).

Come and join us at all our events, they are free and open to all and everyone is welcome!

Christine Keane
Town Clerk
